| Had dinner here with friends recently. I like this pub for its proximity to our house, the building is lovely and the decor pleasant. There is also plenty of room to sit outside alongside the stream. Or outside but under cover with wall heater lamps. However every time we have been in there it has always had a disorganised and not very welcoming feel. Staff getting flustered easily when not even that busy - e.g. the other night took 3 attempts to get a round of 4 drinks. It's not that I wasn't being served, the drinks were complicated or that it was very busy, but simply that the chap behind the bar was distracted and kept dashing off like a headless chicken to do something else inbetween pouring each of the drinks I had ordered. In the end he had to get his colleage to finish off a very simple drinks order! Telling his colleague what was left to do took nearly as long as if he had just done it himself.... There was poor communication between bar and kitchen as to what is still available at time of ordering - husband ordered (and paid for in advance) squid starter only to be told 20 mins later by slightly surly waitress that squid had run out. Hubby said ok in that case please can I order something else (knowing already what he would like instead) and she said she was too busy and walked off!! So we had to go back to bar to re-order, which was in chaos again (despite lots of staff and pub only being half full) and this resulted in our meal being delayed. I felt the attitude of waiting staff was, for the most part, indifferent. We felt as though we were bothering them. By the way in case you were wondering, we were very well behaved, polite, sober and spending quite a bit of money - we were only there for 2 hours and spent at least £70 (4 of us), mainly on food. I also doubt the credentials of their 'chef' who managed to get our steak orders completely wrong - wrong sauces (which were orange and greasy looking anyway), and my rare sirloin was well done and like a piece of shoe leather. When the replacement one came back it had mutated into a thin cut rump steak (with the same , recycled, now cold chips and greasy onion ring next to it) and was cooked medium!! I gave up after that... That said the steak was tasty (if a little dry), as were our mussel starters but everything a little bit on the expensive side for the quality. If you go, we can recommend the burger - hubby has had this as a main more than once and it has always been good. Apart from that we had a fun evening, mainly due to the company!! We would still go back, it's a nice enough (but not great) place. Also for the convenience plus sad as it is to say, you can do much worse in local area![Report for Removal] | Sophie Taunton Somerset |
