| What a shame. This is a beautiful comfortable place to be for lunch. In the spirit of the new year I ordered the fillet steak, something I rarely do. When it arrived it looked the part but as it lay in front of me, a distinctly strange smell drifted to my nose. The aroma of an old cow shed full of manure with a hint of animal breath. When I tried it I could barely stomach the mouthful. However, I'd had a large starter and was with my parents, so was in no mood to make a scene. My parents asked about my steak and I told them I found the taste rather strange. Everyone else tried it and also thought something was wrong with it. At the end of the meal when the waiter came to take my plate, he made the mistake of asking me if there had been a problem, so I mentioned that it tasted peculiar and for this reason had not eaten it. He apologised, and went to speak to the chef. He returned saying the chef was very sorry, which I must say was some comfort for me. His mistake came when he told me that it would obviously be dry as I had asked for it well done. He also explained it was just a steak on a grill, and they hadn't added any herbs or anything. Although many would disagree with my preference for a well done steak, I doubt anyone would confuse the difference between a dry steak (how I like it) and one that pongs of cow breath and manure. I myself am not an adventurous eater, but my father, who also tried the steak, would eat anything from snails to eel, and he couldn't stomach it. The reason I am complaining is not for the steak, but for the blatant disregard of both the waiter and the chef, who instead of offering any replacement, or a sympathetic ear, blamed my preference for well done meat over a failing of the kitchen. I still don't know, and cannot guess, what was wrong with the steak, or why it tasted that way, but I shall not forget it, and their treatment is enough for me not to go back. Whatever you do, don't order the steak well done because as a punishment they wipe it up the backside of their dog before they serve it.[Report for Removal] | Caroline Thomas Eastleigh Hampshire |
