| It was my birthday lunch, a special treat and I received the most appalling service and had the most upsetting experience of my life. I waited for 20 minutes to place my order, which was fine, but when I started to order my food I discovered that one of the items one of my guests wanted was not available. I asked the owner for help - did he have anything similar he could recommend perhaps? I was curtly told to read the menu. The menu that was hidden behind a group of people so I could not see or read it. After asking again for just a simple suggestion I had another board thrust in my hands. Was I given a moment to choose? Not on your life. Instead he started to serve someone behind me. I was carrying a tired and hungry toddler and was clearly struggling to read the board but was treated like I was an enormous inconvenience. I became irritated. I asked if he could please wait for me to choose so I can order my food. I got an another curt response. Finally I had ordered and walked away feeling extremely confused and upset only to have him stop me in front of the entire pub. He then called me the rudest person he has ever met, told me that all the other customers agreed, tore up my order and threw it in my face. My child started to cry, I was utterly humiliated and had to tell my friends we were to leave as we were now banned. I sat in the car crying while they finished their drinks (at my insistence). Thank you for such a memorable birthday experience. I would also like to add that we have been regular customers for two years now so you can imagine how stunned I feel and how upset. I even asked him why he thought I was being rude only to have him say "Oh come on" and stalk off. I am not from the UK and so maybe my tone was wrong or unpleasant but until the moment I got frustrated with such rudeness and unhelpfulness, I was not intentionally rude or nasty. | I live in Calne and this is always the first pub I consider when I’m looking for somewhere to eat and drink. Alan and Heather are always most welcoming, greeting everyone very warmly and genuinely. The variety and quality of their real ales is always excellent and the food very good, whether it’s a weekend lunchtime snack, an evening blow out or a Sunday lunch. Cycle the canal foot path and you can exercise some of the excesses off afterwards as well. Beer excellent, service excellent, food very good, location very good. It ticks most of my boxes. | Yesterday we cycled to the bell from chippenham with the kids. On arrival the bell was very busy and I said to my wife and kids we may have to sit outside - it wasn't the nicest of days. Anyway after a cheery welcome at the bar I asked if we could use a restaurant table to have a drink as they were so busy. Just as soon as I said it, a woman (possibly the landlady) jumped to our assistance, politely asked a big group in the bar to shuffle up onto another table and got the 4 of us a seat. Fantastic service and what a warm welcome. We were only stopping for one drink but were so happy we had another. Well done 'The Bell', we plan to go back for a meal in the next few weeks now.
