| I've dined at the Gradon on several occasions with rather a lengthy wait each time (regardless of how many in our party) for the meal to arrive. We pre-booked our meals for my sons 30th Birthday party as we were rather a large crowd - fine! - the meals arrived promptly. I'm dining again this evening (Wed 15th Feb 2012) for my cousins birthday - not a large crowd this time but we have not pre-ordered our meals. I'm expecting a delay again. I'm intending to order the steak from the Early Bird menu (with frozen chips rather than Home Made) apparently, on a previous visit, I was informed that Home Made Chips are only served with the A La Carte menu. (Dissapointing!. Our party is arriving for 6:30pm and If I have not orderd and had my food served by 7:30-7:45pm I shall be leaving and not returning again! | We have been to the Gradon a few times before and have always had a good experience, hence the decision to go back. This time the occasion was my Father's Birthday. My Mother called the restaurant on Tuesday evening to book a table for six people for Sunday lunch. We were told there were two sittings, either 12.30pm or 2.30pm. We decided to go for the 2.30pm sitting and arrived at around 2.20pm. The car park was busy which is sometimes a good sign because it gives the impression that the place is doing well. Upon arrival we went upstairs and waited by the door. Usually a member of staff would collect you from the door and show you to your table. We stood politely waiting for 5 minutes but felt awkward as we were getting in other people's way and felt we were imposing on people sitting at neighbouring tables. We approached the bar area and ordered a round of drinks. We had been waiting for another 10 minutes so my Mother enquired with a waitress as to when our table would be ready and informed her that we had booked. The young girl looked quite bewildered and said she would go check. She never returned to us and I noticed her standing the other side of the restaurant staring blankly into space. The lady who I believe to be the manager (possibly the owner) approached us and asked if we had a table booked. She couldn't find us on the list and said she would investigate (we should have taken this as an omen and left promptly). The lady returned and said "You are on our main books but someone hadn't put you on the Sunday list. Your table is booked but isn't quite ready". We waited uncomfortably for a further 20 minutes, feeling awkward as we were getting in the way of waiters/customers trying to access the bar. All of this whilst other people who had arrived after us were shown to tables. Eventually a member of staff wiped down and layed the table which had been sitting empty almost the whole time we had been there. We were then shown to the table where the placemats were sticky and stained. I used a napkin to brush something off the table which looked like it had dropped from somebody's nostril. I didn't make a fuss about it, I knew the table had been cleaned in a rushed fashion and not done properly. We waited at the table for 15 minutes before anyone brought us a menu. A waitress came over and told us she only had one menu left so we'd have to share it. A further 15 minutes later the Manager came over and asked if we had chosen and we said it was a bit hard to seeing as we'd only been given one menu and weren't actually informed if we were able to choose from any other pages rather than just the Sunday Lunch page. The lady brought us a further two menus (so we shared one between two) and informed us we could only choose from the Sunday lunch menu as A La Carte had to be pre-booked in advance. Looking over the menu. We were informed that there was no roast beef left, so we asked if they had Yorkshire puddings left over, could we have one each with our food as we were hoping to have roast beef. Seemed like a reasonable enough request. We were quite shocked when looking at the menu to see a choice of strange starters which don't go together with Sunday lunch. There was prawn cocktail, pate, spring rolls & chilli sauce or garlic mushrooms in a creamy sauce. Myself, my brother and his fiancée ordered the garlic mushrooms. A waitress arrived at our table 15 minutes later with Pâté which obviously wasn't ours, so we sent it back. We then saw another waitress walking around with our garlic mushrooms and she returned to the kitchen. Five minutes later they came out and had obviously been microwaved to reheat them. The plate had a small side salad, bread roll and a pot of garlic mushrooms. The mushrooms looked like button mushrooms for a tin and they were tough as if they hadn't been cooked properly. There was also no creamy sauce, they had been just cooked in butter. We ate them anyway due to being so hungry from the long wait, but noted they were not the best. We then waited for about an hour for our main course to turn up. We were tempted to ask for the bill, leave and go somewhere else. But as it was too late everywhere else would have stopped serving lunch. A waiter arrived to put plates on our table which we had to ask him to return two of due to them being dirty. They had dried food and gravy on them. When the lunch arrived we were shocked to see that the pork hadn't been carved off a joint, it was the kind of sliced pork you can buy from the Delicatesen counter of your local supermarket. Same with the chicken, rather than being cut from one roasted chicken, they were cheap chicken portions. We were served our meat by a waitress using tongs and given one roast potato and a stuffing ball with it. We waited a further 5 minutes for any vegetables to arrive and when the waitress was putting them on the table she asked "can I just lean over you" and before giving me a chance to answer leaned over and the cloth resting over her arm went into my food. Very unprofessional. We started serving vegetables onto our plates and waited a further 5 minutes for gravy. The other tables were given Yorkshire puddings and we weren't brought any even though we had specifically asked. I tasted the stuffing ball and regretted it. It was sloppy and the middle was uncooked. My brother noted that the roast potatoes had a distinct taste of lamb juices, which isn't really suited to lamb or chicken courses. The pork was tough, rubbery and in some parts burned. It was inedible and my Mother comented that she could use it as soles on her shoes. The carrots had a really strange taste and the cabbage and swede had been boiled to death, looking rather white and limp. Overall the meal didn't look as if it had been cooked by a chef, everything looked like it had come from cans or packets. I did try some of the food but just couldn't eat it. My Father struggled and my Mother gave up after one carrot. My boyfriend had to spit some of the food into a napkin. We decided to complain and leave. The service had been completely unprofessional and abysmal. The whole time we had been sat at the table not one member of staff approached and asked if everything was OK or if we wanted another drink. My Mother spoke to the Manager who tried blaming everything on there being a mistake with us not being on the booking list. We had booked the table in plenty of time and it was no fault of ours. Really would have expected the staff to have done more for us to make up for all the waiting and bad serivce we had already encountered. The Manager wasn't really apologetic and kept saying "I really don't know what to say". She then told us we could pay for 4 meals instead of 6. So we ended up paying £40 for about 3 mouthfuls of food. I feel absolutely disgusted with the service and feel that it ruined my Father's Birthday. Also, because of the amount of time wasted my Brothers fiancée had to rush off to work having not eaten anything. I've had an upset stomach since and spent the afternoon on the toilet. Very grim day for us all![Report for Removal] | Andrea Lewis Neath Neath Port Talbot County |

| We have been to the Gradon twice now, and each time we thoroughly enjoyed, the food was excellent, could not fault it. The choice of desserts were displayed on a plate, which was brought around at the end of the meal, it was a very good way of showing what desserts they had, rather than the menu. I don't normally have desserts, but the choice was so good I had raspberry cheesecake, which was to die for,you could tell it was home made. As for the service couldn't fault that either, our food was served quick and with a smile, nothing was too much trouble. Will definately be going back!![Report for Removal] | Deborah Reed NEATH West Glamorgan |
