| Had been to lunch there several times, but not recently, so decided to re-visit yesterday. We'd also heard it had changed hands. But it was a nice day and there's a lovely big garden.... Oh dear oh dear! Were suspicious that there were only a couple of cars parked on such a glorious day and hardly mid-week! The bar was totally empty! The young barman had apparently only started there a few months ago and had no idea how to make a St.Clements - OK solved that. Asked for the Menu - phew prices had changed a bit too! But we'd got our drinks so...... finally picked something and went out into the garden. One couple in an area that could probably cater for 60+ people! The tables are rustic, we know that, but were scruffy and not clean. At least two pots of plants on each - on some no space for plates and the flowers desperately need attention. Seating, again rustic - benches and stools were almost without exception perched on mud, some umbrellas broken, dirty ashtrays mainly scattered on the grass. Food arrived - well served exception no condiments. The tables were so dirty we really had to ensure that we didn't put the cutlery on them. Asked for salt and pepper, which were useless because they were both clogged with wet contents. Food was minimal! No veg and only a barely adequate portion of what there was, although it was fairly tasty. A few more passers-by did stop, and were noticeably having the same problem we did in finding somewhere suitable to sit. On enquiring from the barman he says trade has not been good! And yet this place has probably one of the nicest settings of any pub in the area: a few months ago if one called in at 1pm ish, there'd have been something like a 30 minute waiting list for a table. | Pleasant surroundings and garden. Food spoilt by fact that it arrived only lukewarm. Had roast pork + veg (v small amt of veg)and plate/bowl of linguini )no veg provided) Had to send back the pasta to be heated up. Must have been plated up and then left to go cold on the side. The chef and waitress must have known! Not impressed. We arrived early before it got busy so no excuse.[Report for Removal] | J Mortimer Reading Berks |
