| It's a lovely old pub and probably well liked by its clientele. But for those who travel the world, its value for money and quirkiness of service might raise an eyebrow or two. If three people at the table have ordered and been served respectively, the lamb, pork and beef roast, then who on earth trained the waiter to put the dishes of mint sauce, apple sauce and horseradish all on the side plate of the person with beef, leaving the customer to do his job. It wasn't a one off. When he brought a cafetiere of nice but piping hot coffee and put that on the place mat of a 3 year old, on the sloping edge of a drop leaf table, my eyes popped. Had I chosen the moment before to go to the toilet, I would not have been there to whisk it away as the child's hands reached forwards. A small plate for a child costs £8.50 and contains 2 sauages, a few chips and some groggy peas: less than £1 on the table and the only word one can use is "outrageous". Wine by the glass is pricey by North of England standards and the size of the glass desperately small. I'd say 100 ml, but there were no markings on the glass. The roasts were fine. But where was the gravy!! London prices for basic country standard I'm afraid. Maybe I went on an off day. It's popular, so most likely the pleasant ambience makes up for it for some. But my bottom line is "Dear, Oh dear." And I strongly recommend mine host to stop asking if the meal was all right.
