| Our first impression of this place was not favourable – downstairs is singularly unattractive and noisy with little other than the customers to deaden the sound of loud conversation and TVs. It is seriously in need of a makeover, being very dated. We didn’t stay long enough to do a detailed assessment, primarily because early on a Saturday evening the ales on pump weren’t! The upstairs restaurant is reached by the kind of narrow and dimly-lit staircase you associate with backstreet Indian or Chinese eateries, with the menus stuck to the wall at the foot. Upon reaching the first floor you find yourself transported back to ‘70s Berni Inn heaven, complete with all the faux wooden beams, wooden panelling, ‘period lighting’, ornaments, thick reddish carpets and other such décor and furnishings. However, this is where the similarity ends. The menu was sufficiently varied, interesting and reasonably priced to make us stay and give it a try. The service from young student staff was very good, cheerful and attentive. We found the wine to be sensibly priced. The chocolate fudge torte was disgustingly wonderful!! We ate there twice and thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Highly recommended. The room is cosy (but watch out for the window seats – they can be draughty) and the carpet/furnishings mean that diners can hold a conversation at normal levels rather than need to shout above the noise of others. A word of warning though: the restaurant is not large and can become full very quickly – it is advisable to book at peak times. Score based on overall impression of bar and restaurant - the latter could easily be +3 or more, but let down by the bar.[Report for Removal] | ESP Netherton West Midlands |
