| We visited this watering hole in early 2005 and it remained pretty much unchanged in the dying days of 2006. There are music memorabilia and posters everywhere, which is in keeping with its role as a music venue. It is a sprawling, subterranean bar well-suited to students and the young at heart, with a limited bar menu (although the chips ‘n’ cheese was good!) If you arrive just after it has opened, the puddles of water on the flagstones don’t indicate a plumbing problem – just that the floor has been recently washed. Relaxed early afternoon atmosphere (but watch out for press-gangs wanting pool opponents!) although I imagine evenings might be a different matter altogether. Real ales are limited to Deuchars IPA, maybe another guest, and a strange brew which, if I recall correctly, is fermented with heather. Hmmm, not to my taste despite the barman’s urgings! The gents’ was clean and panelled in funky stainless steel throughout (apart from the flagged floor). Furnishings range from standard wooden chairs or stools to comfy battered sofas and armchairs. Flat screen TVs show sport, etc, but in our experience at sensible volume levels. It’s a bit of a trek from the centre, being tucked away below the main Royal Mile drag, but convenient for the Mercat Tours office which is close-by (or was in 2005!)[Report for Removal] | ESP Netherton West Midlands |
