| Lovely old pub near a lovely old village. Close to Millennium Way long distance footpath. Decent selection of proper beer. This is a Chef & Brewer pub. An extensive and reasonably priced menu and most of our party thought the food was 'alright' - but that's all. I had a chicken and ham pie - quite tasty but there were no chunks of chicken or ham, just a sort of puree inside. Nice to have a little jug of gravy. The mash was dry - was it made from powder? Had a side order of crispy sweet potato fries - very good. Worse, though - our tray of ordered drinks was left on the bar and we had to get it ourselves. One of our party was not served until we'd finished eating. To be fair, we weren't charged for that meal. But there was a lack of organisation among the staff and they did not have good inter-personal skills with the customers. Would go there for a drink again, but I don't think we'd eat there. | We visited the Bear on the 16/7/10, we have been many times before and have been pleased with the quality of the food for the price range, and like the promotions. However on this occasion, we first went to the Boat at Catherine-D-Barnes,and before we sat down asked about the Summer special which was advertised on a large board at the entrance to the Boat, the young lady waitress we asked looked at us quizically and said I dont know what you mean, she then got someone I believe was serving behind the bar and he hadnt a clue what we were talking about, so they went outside to look at the large notice,I then asked what the deal entailed and her reply was we are working on it. We then decided to go to the Bear at Berkswell instead, and lo and behold asked the same question about the promotion, and got the same answer as above. We both burst out laughing as we could not believe it had happened twice, it was eventually sorted out and we did enjoy the meal. The staff are pleasant but I feel could do with more training, as they do not appear to be very organised, and the party next to us had a meal served after everyone else had eaten theirs, also a waitress brought some chips late and I quote said "where do you want them" unquote. Also we were given a card "tell us about your experience" and enter into a draw for £1000, the number on our card is 4 6614 872 which acording to the website and me telephoning the number on the card does not exsist!!!!!! as it is supposed to be a nine digit number which it is not, therefore I was not able to enter the competition. so I would be obliged if you could let me know why, and also enter me in the competition.We will be dining there as usual and it was a memorable evening, even for the wrong reasons, as we found it all very amusing. | Lovely old building with pleasant ambience, but very slow service and extremely poor food. One child's meal had packet mashed potato and all other vegetables were overcooked and soggy. One adult's meal had a large piece of cardboard amongst the monge-tout, but the food generally was very poor.
