| I was not impressed at all with the quality of food at the Spreadeagle pub. I have not been back to England in 4 years and I wanted to take my family there, what I thought was the brewers fayre. We got there and found it had changed to a privately owned pub instead. The prices were top end and the food was most certainly not. We had simple dishes of chicken pasta and it was dry and very chewy chicken, the flavour was mediocre not so bad but there was a bad after taste. We mentioned this to the staff at the end of our meal on paying (I never mention during the meal as I never wish to have it replaced. I`ve worked in a kitchen and know just how fussy customers are treated) When I told them they replied with a sorry that was not at all believable and did nothing to make things better with our bill. In fact the staff were just not interested and had a serious face of gloom. The atmosphere was good but the resteraunt was dead. Only 3 tables had customers. I`m assuming that is why the food was such poor quality. The after taste was due to the quality of the meat too which is very concerning. | Have been to this restaurant several times before and always found them to be very hospitable but went on a family meal out recently and had a very different experience. Due to medical reasons I have to eat food that does not contain gluten, which I might add has never been a problem before at this restaurant and the chef has even prepared a sauce without gluten for me. On this occasion however, I asked the waiter what I could have on the menu that was gluten-free. He went to ask the chef and came back saying that the chef was not sure what gluten free meant, this automatically sent warning bells out for me and I was also shocked as I had never experienced this before. I explained what it was and the waiter went back to the chef who said I could only have steak or fish as he wasn't prepared to put everyone elses orders behind to prepare me a gluten free sauce for any of the other dishes. I chose grilled plaice, that was easy enough for this 'top of the range' chef I thought. My husband ordered a mixd grill only to be told at 6 0'clock in the evening that they had 'sold out?' There was only three other families in the whole of the restaurant. My grilled plaice arrived and immediately I could smell something strange, upon tasting the fish I realised that the fish was actually off. I called over the waiter who apologised and asked if I would like another plaice grilling. I agreed to this only for the remark to come back from the chef that he wasn't prepared to cook me another plaice as there was nothing wrong with the first one and that a second one would only taste the same. Was he calling me a liar?, I thought as this was supposed to be a family treat I felt extremely annoyed and decided against having anything else prepared for me by the faceless chef. I asked for the name of the manager whom I called the next day, she was very apologetic and offered us a compensatory meal and said she would talk to the chef as preparing a gluten free meal should not be a problem. She said she would call me the next day with the outcome and details of how to receive our complementary meal. 10 days later I am still waiting. I have informed my family and friends not to contemplate going to this restaurant until they have employed a chef with some manners. Very dissatisfied customer.
