We have recently bought the freehold of Sutton Hall, a listed 16th century manor house just outside Macclesfield. The hall itself just oozes character: it is a Tudor half-timbered building, with exposed beams, inglenook fireplaces, oak panelling, creaking floorboards and a nice old staircase. It even has an apparently genuine priest’s hole in one of the bedrooms (a hiding place for priests during the Catholic persecution which began in the early years of Elizabeth 1st’s reign). The building is similar in character to the Pant yr Ochain, and we imagine we’re going to be just as proud of it. It has been trading as hotel and pub, with ten bedrooms, and we bought it from the Bradshaws. They have been there for over 27 years, and it was an awful wrench for them to part with it, but they’ve surely earned a break. We’re going to carry out a root and branch renovation to bring it to peak condition, and will as ever go to great lengths to preserve the character and integrity of the building, which is after all what attracted us in the first place. It could take up to a year, but we’re in no rush and we’re going to do it properly. The house is set in beautiful and extensive grounds bordered by the canal, and there are a number of excellent trees including this old beech: Behind the house there is a small chapel and chaplain’s house which probably date from the 16th century. The chapel had been restored in 1950, but the roof has now partially collapsed and we’ll need to do a lot of work to restore it. Telephone Number to be confiremed.
