The Friar was Arkell's first pub in Oxford when they bought it in 1996. Built in 1938 by Ind Coope the pub gained it's name from the area it stands in, called the Friars because the area was established by the Grey and Blackfriars in the 13th century. When much of the area was demolished in 1995 the former owners changed it's name to the Brewery Pound, the change was universally unpopular and upon buying the pub Arkell's changed it back. The Friar is close to the pleasant suburb of Headington and only five minutes from the centre of Oxford, making it a handy watering hole for visitors to the city. It is also popular with locals as well as students from the universities. They are all attracted by a pub where the emphasis is on relaxation. There is a small public bar and a large lounge with a door to the garden, which all makes for a pleasant atmosphere to bring all the family.
